Vindula arsinoe (Cramer, 1777) , or the cruiser can be found from the Maluku Islands and New Guinea to the Solomon Islands and Queensland.
Its wingspan is about 80 mm.
The butterfly is supposed to be first described by Dutch merchant and entomologist Pieter Cramer in 1777.
And may seem strange, for Pieter Cramer died in 1776. In fact, he gathered a great natural history collection and engaged the painter Gerrit Wartenaar to draw his specimens. The result, a great work named “De Uitlandsche Kapellen” was published in 1775-1782, an issue every three months. Pieter Cramer died in 1776, but specimen, described and named by him, continued being published 9 years after his death.
The bead butterfly is woven of 10 colours.
The bead pattern will be available later.
